Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs

Introduction

At Alt Bridge School we are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all our pupils, including those with medical needs. We recognise that some children may require additional care during the school day, whether on a short-term or long-term basis, and we work in partnership with families and healthcare professionals to ensure that these needs are met effectively and sensitively.

1. Trained and Prepared Staff

  • Several staff members hold a full first aid certificate.
  • Staff supporting pupils with specific medical needs receive condition-specific training from relevant health practitioners.
  • Training ensures staff can act confidently and appropriately in any medical situation.

2. Medications in School

  • Medications are only administered with written parental/carer consent.
  • Medicines are securely stored and administered following individual care plans.
  • A log is kept of all administered medication.
  • Pupils are encouraged to manage their own medication where appropriate, under supervision.
  • Parents must keep the school informed of any changes in medical needs.

3. Medical Room

Our medical room is equipped to support a variety of medical needs: – Bed for rest and recovery – Comprehensive first aid supplies – Private toilet and shower facilities – Staffed by trained personnel throughout the school day

4. Supporting Pupils with Epilepsy

  • Staff are trained to recognise and respond to different types of seizures.
  • Emergency protocols are followed as outlined in individual care plans.
  • Emergency medication is administered when necessary.
  • Pupils are supported in a calm, safe environment during and after a seizure.

5. Supporting Pupils with Allergies

  • Individual allergy care plans are in place.
  • Emergency medication (e.g. EpiPens) is stored securely and accessibly.
  • Staff are trained to respond to allergic reactions.
  • Catering staff are informed of food allergies to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Allergy awareness is promoted across the school.

6. Supporting Pupils with Asthma

  • Pupils have access to their inhalers at all times.
  • Staff are trained to recognise asthma symptoms and administer emergency care.
  • Individual asthma care plans are maintained and reviewed.
  • A spare emergency inhaler is kept in school.
  • Pupils are encouraged to manage their asthma independently where appropriate.

7. Meeting Medical Needs on School Trips

  • All trips are accompanied by first aid trained staff.
  • Medications are taken on all off-site visits and managed according to care plans.
  • Trained staff accompany pupils with specific medical needs.
  • Venues are contacted in advance to ensure necessary medical facilities are available.
  • Parents must provide up-to-date medical information before any school trip.

8. School Nurse

  • A designated school nurse supports health and medical provision.
  • The nurse offers advice and training to staff and support to pupils and families.
  • Parents and carers may contact the nurse directly via the school office.
  • Drop-in sessions are available for pupils to access confidential support.
