Rights Respecting School

What is our Equalities mission statement?

Student created Equali-team mission statement.

‘We, the staff and students of the Alt Bridge School Equali-team pledge to promote the rights, wants and needs of every person in our school. We accept and value everyone for who we are and work hard to promote equality across the 9 protected characteristics and embodying our schools core values of courtesy, care, determination and resilience in everything we do.’

What does the equalities teams do?

The Alt Bridge Equali-team are a dedicated team of staff and students who promote equality and celebrate diversity at Alt Bridge. We plan events, fundraise and work with local social groups to gain an understanding of social issues in our local community. Over the past three years, the team has worked towards the achieving a number of goals including UNICEF rights respecting schools award.

We have a thriving student team who approach everything they do with a passion for acceptance and a strong enthusiasm.

We listen to the beliefs, values and opinions of our students and strive to provide personal development opportunities through events and activities based around equality, equity and diversity in all its forms.

Our committed staff and pupil groups have worked hard to embed Rights into every aspect of School life through a whole host of activities and events that have included:

  • Working with a School in Pakistan and Bangladesh to develop cultural links
  • Celebrating events such as Neurodiversity week, Pride week, Black History Month and World Human Rights Day.
  • Work on P4C to encourage independent thought and free thinking
  • Equalities Inset training with Teaching and Support Staff
  • Enhance the School environment to reflect our commitment to rights that included the equali tree display, noticeboards as well as refitting calm and sensory rooms and introducing sensory circuits
  • Work with the Knowsley Refugee charity SHARE
  • Regular Equality Newsletters
  • Weekly School Assemblies with Rights of the Week
  • Curriculum work on rights through works to include literature, History, Geography, RE and Art.

Alt Bridge is a School where rights are fully embedded.

We achieved the Rights respecting difference GOLD award in April 2025. We are the first Knowsley Secondary School to achieve this award.

UNICEF Said:

“We are delighted to award RRSA Gold status to Alt Bridge School. The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises the school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond. Nearly 5000 schools up and down the country are working through the Rights Respecting Schools Award and we hope that the work of Alt Bridge School will inspire other schools in Knowsley and beyond to follow their lead.”

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination, and participation.

The RRSA puts the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop all child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.

A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected, and promoted. Young people and the school community learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day.

We are a rights respecting school where the inherent dignity of every child is valued. Students have a strong voice and are regularly consulted about the development of our school.  Students speak positively about the strong relationships within our school and the respect shown in our School community.
