Year 11 Overview

Upper school is currently taught in both year 10 and 11, following two separate strands of musical appreciation, both using AQA accredited units as a focus for progression.

•  Musical Appreciation using specific genres , for example 12 bar blues: pupils listen to and appraise various styles of the blues, including its origins, development and recent blues trends.

Pupils then engage in practical activities as they learn to play the 12 bar blues on specific instruments.

Keyboard skills are developed and enhanced by learning the set patterns and note progressions of the 12 bar blues structure.

Pupils learn two different ways of playing the patters; as walking bass and as chord progressions using 1 4 & 5 in more than one key signature.

They listen to the blues being performed by various artists, from (eg) Muddy Waters to Chris Rea, copying their chordal progressions.
