Aims of the department:

At Alt Bridge we aspire to provide a high-quality art and design education which engages, inspires and challenges pupils; equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they are supported to think critically and develop their understanding of art and design. This is in line with the National Curriculum aims for the subject.

Art and Design at Alt Bridge aims to enable pupils to:

•  produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

•  become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

•  evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

•  know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Course Structure:

All pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 follow the KS3 national curriculum in Art and Design giving them the same opportunities as their mainstream counterparts. All lessons are differentiated to the needs of each pupil. Dedicated, passionate and supportive staff help to drive a love for learning in Art and Design. Aiming for exceptional outcomes for pupils across the key stages.

Pupils have the opportunity to study towards Unit Award, Entry Level or GCSE Art and Design. Where appropriate, Art and Design at Key Stage 4 is introduced in Year 9. GCSE Art and Design at Alt Bridge allows pupils to progress their interests in their chosen aspect of the subject. For instance, the course incorporates units of study ranging from Graphic Communication and 3D sculpture. Pupils are supported to select a strong starting point and guided to realise their intentions moving forward in their research. Previous successful pupils have focused on street art and incorporating the styles of artists like Banksy into promotional materials.

GCSE Art and Design:

Art continues to be an important subject for pupils at Alt Bridge. Pupil outcomes are driven by research, experimentation and annotation as a way to reflect and realise intentions. Pupils begin AQA Art and Design in Year 9. Year 9 takes on a workshop structure for pupils and provides them with the skills necessary for them to take their starting points further in upper school. Pupils follow the new AQA Art and Design GCSE Specification

Skills-based Approach:

The specification has been designed to allow students to develop knowledge and understanding during

the course through a variety of learning experiences and approaches, including engagement with

sources. This will allow them to develop the skills to explore, create and communicate their own ideas.

Students will demonstrate these skills through the development, refinement, recording, realisation and

presentation of their ideas through a portfolio and by responding to an externally set assignment
